Ear Care in Dogs and Cats

The ear canals of certain animals, such as dogs, are designed in a twist shape to facilitate their function, which, unfortunately, can hinder natural ear cleaning.

Remember that the outer ear corresponds to what we know as the ear flap, and the inner part up to the eardrum, while the inner ear is responsible for sending nerve signals to the brain.

It is essential to carry out regular ear cleaning to prevent wax from hardening and affecting hearing, as well as avoiding possible ear infections. We are talking about cleaning the external ears. As for the frequency of cleaning, this can vary for each animal. When in doubt, it is always recommended to consult a veterinarian. However, here are some general guidelines for maintaining healthy and clean ears:

Periodic cleanings according to breed and activity

Weekly or monthly routine cleaning:

  • Dogs with long or floppy ears: Breeds like the Cocker Spaniel, Basset Hound, and Golden Retriever are prone to excess wax and dirt in their ears. It is recommended to clean their ears every week or every two weeks.
  • Cats with hairy ears: If you have a cat with hairy ears, such as a Maine Coon or a Persian cat, it is important to inspect their ears regularly and remove dirt if it accumulates.

Monthly or quarterly cleaning:

  • Breeds prone to infections: Some breeds, like the Shar Pei and Bulldog, have a higher predisposition to ear canal infections due to the structure of their ears. In these cases, monthly or quarterly cleaning may be necessary.
  • Pets spending time in water: If your pet enjoys swimming frequently, they are prone to moisture accumulation in the ear canal, increasing the risk of infections. In these cases, monthly cleaning should be considered.

Cleaning as needed:

Pets with healthy ears: If your pet has naturally clean ears and shows no signs of wax buildup, dirt, or infections, it may not be necessary to clean their ears regularly. However, it is always advisable to occasionally inspect their ears for any potential problems.
