Hepatitis in Dogs: A Challenge for Canine Liver Health

Hepatitis, inflammation of the liver, can affect dogs regardless of their age or breed. This vital organ performs multiple essential functions, including toxin elimination, protein synthesis, bile production, and nutrient absorption, putting the animal’s well-being at risk.

Types of Canine Hepatitis:

Common Hepatitis: This form of hepatitis is often triggered by the ingestion of toxic substances or medications that can have harmful side effects on the liver.

Autoimmune Hepatitis: In this case, hepatitis is caused by a reaction of the dog’s immune system against its own liver cells, which can result in severe liver damage.

Infectious Hepatitis: Originated by adenovirus CAV-1, this form of hepatitis is highly contagious. It is transmitted through nasal secretions and saliva or by ingestion of food or water contaminated by feces or urine from infected animals.

Symptoms of Hepatitis in Dogs:

Symptoms of canine hepatitis can vary but generally include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting
  • Jaundice (yellowing of mucous membranes and skin)
  • Abdominal pain
  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea

Importance of Prevention and Treatment

Since hepatitis can endanger the life of your dog, proper prevention and treatment are crucial. Keep your pet away from toxic substances and make sure they are up to date with their vaccinations to prevent infectious hepatitis. If you suspect your dog may have hepatitis, seek veterinary attention immediately. The sooner it is diagnosed and treated, the greater the chances of recovery and a healthy life for your canine companion.

Hepatitis in dogs is a serious health challenge, but with proper attention, prevention, and care, you can help protect your beloved four-legged friend’s liver health.
