Glaucoma in Cats and Dogs: A Threat to Vision

Glaucoma is a serious ocular condition that can affect both cats and dogs. It is characterized by an abnormal increase in intraocular pressure (IOP) within the eye. This increase in pressure can damage the optic nerve, which is responsible for transmitting visual signals to the brain. If not properly controlled, glaucoma can lead to irreversible vision loss and, in severe cases, blindness.

The optic nerve is vital for vision as it transmits visual signals from the retina to the brain. Increased intraocular pressure irreversibly damages the nerve fibers of the optic nerve, leading to the loss of its function. This results in a progressive loss of vision and visual field in the affected eye.

Symptoms of Glaucoma in Dogs and Cats

Symptoms of glaucoma in cats and dogs can vary, but some common signs include:

  • Eye pain, manifested by excessive blinking and sensitivity to light.
  • Red eyes.
  • Dilated pupils.
  • Decreased vision.

Changes in the appearance of the eye, such as an increase in the size of the affected eye.
Prevention is essential when it comes to glaucoma. Regular eye examinations with a veterinarian are crucial, especially if your pet is of a breed prone to glaucoma. Detecting and treating this condition early can make a difference in preserving vision.
