How to Care for Cat Fur

Taking care of a cat’s fur is essential to keep it shiny and prevent skin problems. There are several issues that can arise if we neglect this aspect.

  • Tangles and Knots: Regular brushing prevents tangles and knots that can be uncomfortable and, in severe cases, may even require grooming to resolve.
  • Irritated Skin and Skin Problems: The accumulation of loose hair (or dead hair) and dirt in the fur can cause irritation or other problems. These can include itching, redness, and, in extreme cases, skin infections.
  • Poor Thermoregulation: Neglected fur can make it difficult for your cat to maintain an appropriate body temperature, especially in cold climates.

Remember that depending on the type of fur, you will need to care for your cat’s hair in one way or another.

Hairballs and Their Relationship with Cat Fur Care

When a cat grooms itself, it ingests loose hair. If dead hair is not removed through brushing, it can accumulate in the digestive tract and form hairballs. These are generally associated with two types of problems:

Gastrointestinal Problems: Vomiting, constipation, and, in severe cases, intestinal obstructions. These problems can be painful and require veterinary attention.

General Discomfort: Hairballs can cause general discomfort in cats, which can manifest as lethargy, loss of appetite, and changes in behavior. You should also consult a veterinarian.
